Shushtar is located in the northwest of Khuzestan plain which is at altitude of 65 meters above the sea level. The eastern and western borders of this county have been constituted from the final hillsides of Zagros and Dez River.

The climate of this city, like the other cities in this province, is warm in summer and temperate mediterranean in the winter. Shushter consists of 3 parts named “Shoaybiyeh”, ”Markazi”, ”Mian ab“, 4 cities as “Gorieh“, ”Shoushtar”, ”Sherafat”, ”Sardaran“ and 7 rural districts.

Shushtar is the fourth populated city of this province after Ahvaz, Dezful and Abadan. Karun and Dez rivers pass across this city. Shushtar has a traditional, specific and compacted architecture, various handicrafts specially the weaving industry like (well-known weavings such as Diba (a kind of textile) and Shushtari’s parand) have been common in this region from the past.

"Gushe Shoushtari" or "Maye Shoushtari" is known a famous Gushe in Iranian music. This city is full of complex structures such as bridges, networks, mills and waterfalls in addition to the various attractions. The area of Shushtar's mills and waterfalls are the industrial, economic and recreational places and they have been the important places of this city in different periods.

Shushtar is one of the most important agricultural regions with the products such as wheat, corn, beans and cucurbits. Two big industrial units of Karun agro-industry are the important industrial centers of sugar production in this area. Livestock is the second important occupation after agriculture in Shushter. This city is also an aquaculture valuable center in Iran.

There are plaster, lime, ashlar and sand mines in Shushtar. Shushtar people speak in Shushtari dialect which is one of the Farsi dialects however, the Bakhrtiari and Arabi dialects are spoken by someones in this region. There was Saebin place of worship in this city before Saebin immigration from Shushtar to Ahvaz.
