Khoy in the northwest of West Azerbaijan, on the border of Turkey, is located in a vast plain at the height of 1130 meters above the sea level. Khoy is 135 meters lower than the Urmia lake level.

The climate of this city is warm in summer and very cold in winter. Khoy consists of 4 districts named ”Ivughli”, ”Markazi”, ”Qatur”, ”Safaeie”, 6 cities and 11 rural districts.

Khoy is the second largest and most populated city in West Azerbaijan province. Khoy enjoys an economic, military and political importance by its salt, coal, copper and gold mines, numerous factories, handicrafts such as rug weaving, pottery, etc., textile industries, food industries, printing & publishing and leather making, its strategic location and placing in the Silk Road among west and east commercial road. Livestock and aviculture, turkey and ostrich beside the agriculture and products such as sunflower seeds and zucchini, honey and damask rose constitute the economy of this region.

Historical and religious monuments beside the natural attractions and mineral springs and summer festivals are the tourist attraction of this region. The people of Khoy speak in the Turkish Azerbaijani language and most of them are Shia and a small group of them are followers of Sunni.
