One of the applied handicrafts of Semnan is Gelich Bafi. Like many other handwoven crafts of Iran, Gelich is a very ancient, and since it looks like Kilim, it has locally been named Gelich. The warps of Gelich are cotton yarns and the wefts are colorful wool yarns.

The tools of making Gelich are similar to textile machinery, but the product is like Kilim. Since Gelich is produced with machinery, the rate of production is higher and from the financial point of view, it is more efficient. Method of weaving Gelich is similar to those of making fabrics, the only difference is that spun cotton yarns with high level of twist are used as wraps. To insert the wefts, colorful wool yarn is used that creates beautiful designs of geometric motifs in various colors. Gelich are made in size of prayer rugs, ground cloth and doormat.

It can be used to make objects such as “Sar Hamoumi”, “Ayeneh Kiseh”, “Tablou Nama”, “Asb Sari”, “Padari”, “Kej Kiseh” and “Korsi Sari”. Sar Hamoumi is a kind of bag that holds bath tools and accessories and the owner takes with himself when he goes to a public bath house. Ayeneh Kiseh, literarily meaning mirror bag, is a small sachet that was used to carry make up accessories or occasionally needle and thread. Asb Sari, meaning over the horse, is a big-sized piece of Gelich. It was laid on the horse in the weddings, so that it was more appealing when the dowry was being carried or the groom was going to have his ritual bath. Kaj Sari is a sachet that, in the past, was put on the wall to hold spoons and forks. Today, it is filled with fibers and is used as cushions. Korsi Sari, is the cover of Korsi (a low table with heater underneath it) that was used to add to the beauty of the settings.

Gelich has many famous patterns, such as “Gorji Douneh” (the diamond motif like the Kelim), “Domdar”, “Panjeh Gol”, “Kharjin” and “Chahar Dastmal”. Northern cities and villages of Semnan named Arvast, Foulad Mahaleh, Reza Abad and Chashem are major centers of producing beautiful hand woven Gelich. To preserve Gelich, it is very important to protect it from moth, humidity, flames, direct and constant sunlight, chemical bleachers and sharp objects. Gelich can easily be cleaned by using only soap and lukewarm water.
