Jaleh Amouzgar (West Azerbaijan)

Jaleh Amouzgar was born in Azar 1318 SH in Khoy. After spending a part of her high school, she obtained her fifth-year scientific diploma from Irandokht Highschool in Khoy and sixth-year from Irandokht Highschool in Tabriz; she entered the Faculty of Letters and Humanities of the University of Tabriz in order to continue her studies. Being a top student in literature at university, she was awarded a scholarship as the best students among all were awarded at that time. She did not benefit from that scholarship in the first place because her traditional family did not like her to travel abroad alone.

She was married and worked as a teacher in 1342 SH when the Ministry of Culture announced that top students who did not use their award, they could reopen their case. So, she went to France later, now accompanied by her husband and daughter and continued studying at Sorbonne University. Her Ph.D. assertion is about Zoroastrian literature in Persian language, which means the Zoroastrian writings and texts, which were written after Islam in Persian but according to Zoroastrian tradition. She was graduated with the best grade Ph.D. and she returned to Iran in 1347 SH. She moved to Culture Foundation from the Ministry of Education to work there. In that time, there were not any authentic Persian resources about Iranistics. However, she and other scholars, such as Mehrdad Bahar, Mohsen Abul-Qâsemi, Fereydun Vahman, Mohammad Salim, each started to study one Pahlavi book and wrote their glossary under the supervision of Parviz Khanlari. After 2 years, she worked as a professor at the University of Tehran in 1359 SH. She said about her studying days and university: “I believed that we do not learn many things when we study and it is the years later that one become familiar with the essence of working and knowledge”. To her, the studentship is just the beginning and we just acquire knowledge of the method of learning. It is just the beginning and not the end when someone got his/her Ph.D. The persons feel how he himself and also his works were immature”

Amouzgar has a lot of works and texts which can be categorized into writing books, translating books, and writing an essay. She wrote Zoroastrian myth of life (with the collaboration of late Ahmad Tafazzoli), Pahlavi language, literature and instructions, Mythological history of Iran. And as a translator, she translated Book of Arda Viraf, and also the types of the first man and the first king in the mythical history of the Iranians again with the collaboration of late Ahmad Tafazzoli.
