One of the main handicrafts and souvenirs of Zanjan province is a kind of shoe which is called Charoq by locals. Charoq is a sort of traditional shoes which is made of raw leather and it has no heel in most cases. However, the current Charoqs which are produced in Zanjan using tanned leather are more decorative, being used as carpet shoes while they have a small heel. They are usually sewed in a very delicate way using cow leather, colorful silk and Golabtun threads in different kinds. The history of Charoq Duzi in Zanjan backs to Sassanid period while it flourished during Safavid period. 

Different kinds of Zanjan products which have been popular in different periods include: hempen, totally skin-made, farmer, totally leather-made (open or close in back), lace, etc. each created using different materials like cotton, hemp, silk, leather, processed skin and etc. Lace Charoq and Pardeh-band Charoq are restrictively produced in Zanjan and leather Charoq can be converted into carpet shoes with delicate decorations based on the costumer’s taste and order. The provenance of Charoq art in Zanjan used to be the city of Soltanieh but it was later transferred to Zanjan.
