Located in Tajrish district of Tehran, the building of Music Museum of Tehran is, in fact, a large garden-house that was beautifully designed and constructed in 1351 SH in three stories for personal and residential functions. Its restoration was started from 1382 SH and opened in 1388 SH. The museum has more than 3600 square meter area. Music Museum aimed at protecting the traditional music of Iran and also the conservation of Iranian musicians’ art pieces as well as the introduction of them to the public.

The traditional and original Iranian music is constituted of Dastgah, Naghmeh, Avaz and Gusheh backing to the years before Christ. This music has orally remained over many generations to the present and some parts of which has naturally been omitted or completed. Iranian music has influenced different countries like Afghanistan, Pakistan, the Republic of Azerbaijan, Armenia, Turkey and Greek.

Radifs of Iranian Music has been inscribed on the World List of Intangible Heritage. Music Museum of Iran includes seven main parts: 1- Hall of exhibiting original and traditional musical instrument of Iran from Percussion, bowed string and string instruments to the specific instruments of local regions of Iran each displayed in its unique hall; 2- part of the museum treasure including the old instruments belonged to the famous musicians and composers interesting among which are the specific instruments of individuals like Keyhan Kalhor (the famous contemporary Kamanche player), Mirza Abdollah Farahani (the highlighted master of Tar and Setar playing in Qajar period) and many more; 3- the audiovisual archive where there is the large and invaluable archive of the complex with hundred hours of audio works and thousands of pieces of old pictures; 4- the exhibition of recording and broadcasting equipment which, as obvious by its name, displays the machines related to recording and broadcasting like gramophone, phonograph, cassette, tape recorder etc., from the past to the present; 5- the studio of making and restoring the musical instruments, located in the basement, where the old instruments are restored and specific instruments are created by the skillful and experienced maters like Bayaz Amir Atayie; 6- the specific library of music.
