Urmia city is located at 20 km west of Urmia Lake between the Urmia pampas on the hillside of the Sir Mountain with the height of 1322 m above the sea level. The climate of Urmia is partly warm in summer and quite cold in winter. Urmia consists of 5 parts as "Silvand ", "Someye Baradardost", "Anzal", "Nazlou", "Markazi", 5 cities and 20 rural districts. Urmia Lake is the biggest domestic lake and the second great salty water in the world. This city had been registered as a 19th historical city of Iran in UNESCO with an antiquity of more than 3000 years as the oldest city in northwest of Iran. Urmia is a 10th populous city in Iran and the second populated city in the northwest of Iran. Based on the appropriate location between the main ways of Caucasus, main Roudan and Anatolia, Urmia has been a main trade center from past to present. Indeed, Urmia is located along many commercial ways an accordingly it has been known as a custom house for export and import. Also, it is the place of buy and sell the crops and nomad products of the Urmia suburbs.
This city is well known for the first modern hospital, medical training center, modern school, local TV channel and local publication. It is also considered to be the capital of volleyball in Iran. The name of this city had changed to Rezaeie in Pahlavi dynasty, which returned again to Urmia after the revolution. Urmia is a multi-ethic city with varied religions. Most of the people who live in Urmia are Turk of Azerbaijan and the other ethics such as Kurds and Christian (Assyrian, Armenian) also live there, too. The dominant language in Urmia are Turkish of Azerbaijan with a northwestern dialect the same as the dialect of Tabrize people. The Kurds of Urmia speak in Kormanji dialect and Assyrians speak in Ashurike which is a type of east Arami containingmany words from Kurdish, Turkish, Persian and Arabic and finally Armenians speak in Armeni. The most of Urmia people religion is Shia, however, there are many Sunni people who live there (Hanafi – Shafei); also, a branch named Ahle Hagh live in Urmia, too. Most of the Kurds who live in Urmia are Sunni.
