Maku is located in the north east of west Azarbaijan and enjoys a specific geographical and natural location.

Maku has been established at the height of 1294 m above the sea level in a valley passes through which the Zangmar River and divided the city into the northern and southern parts.

This city limited to Qarasu River and Turkey from the north, the Aras River (Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic and Armenia) from east, Khoy from the south and Turkey from the west.

The climate of this city is moderate in winters and warmer in summer due to the stony mountains around. Maku consists of two parts naming”Markazi” and “Bazargan“, two cities and 5 rural districts.

Mountainous landscapes, flourishing pastures, Hot water springs, waterfalls, protected areas and hunting grounds besides the old churches, palaces and edifices are tourist attractions of this area. Maku is located on the main road of Tabriz-Bazargan and has a very exceptional strategic location.

The main and most important features of the city are the only land border business of the country in Bazargan border and link road to Europe. The border transaction between Iran and Turkey take place in Trans-boundary market (Sarisu) of Maku. Maku industrial complex in Maku-Bazargan road constitutes a part of Maku economy.  The economy of Maku people is based on cross-border trade, agriculture and animal husbandry.

Most of Maku people speak in Azerbaijani Turki, they are Muslims and follower of Sunni religion.
